Rooting Insights

We talked to farmers, extension agents and scientists

We conducted three rounds interviews with 15 experts to further explore perspectives on agricultural technology.

Key Findings

Weather uncertainty, shifting policies, and differing goals create strain around change.

Farmers rely on extension agents to help smooth out communication differences.

The lack of standardization in processes creates distrust in data intended to help farmers.

"Agricultural production is very dynamic, plans change depending on weather, may change by the day or even by the hour so we have to build resiliency in plans."

"Farmers trust info from scientists/universities but getting info 48 hours later won’t help them. They need info in real-time."

"Some farmers are good at record keeping, others are not, it's a privacy matter. Sometimes they don’t want their data to be accessed by someone they don’t want."

Looking into competitors tackling climate change and agriculture

We faced setbacks trying to accommodate three target audiences by designing many screens, as well as checking the accuracy of our content writing.

To overcome this, we prioritized the most important screens to have the most functionality and consulted with our users that the content writing made sense in context.

While developing our concept for our sensor, we sought out help from an Industrial Designer to elevate our original design. We also looked into how it would function and how much it would cost for farmers based on the current market.
